Honduras Flood Death Toll At 13...09/29/99

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) - The death toll from 17 days of torrential rain in Honduras has risen to 13 and the storms show no sign of ending, the government said Tuesday. Flooding also hit Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica. The economic damage has been devastating for Honduras, which is still struggling to rebuild after last year's Hurricane Mitch, which caused billions of dollars in damage and killed more than 5,000 people. More than 12,350 acres of banana, coffee, sugar cane, cocoa and basic grains are under water, 12 highways are intransitable and 727 houses and 16 bridges have been destroyed. The damage has occurred throughout Honduras. Ten thousand Hondurans have been cut off by the storm and 7,000 have been evacuated, said Arturo Corrales, an official with the federal government's emergency commission.
