BEIJING (AP) - Typhoon York slammed into the southeastern coast of China, killing six people and causing extensive flooding, state media said Friday. The city of Guangzhou suffered a direct hit Thursday from York, which flooded streets and closed the airport, the Xinhua News Agency said. It was the first direct hit by a typhoon since 1975 on the city, also known as Canton. The area has received more than 6.9 inches of rain since Thursday night, the report said. No deaths were reported, but public schools closed and students were sent home. Six people were killed in the southeastern province of Fujian, and more than 10,000 people were stranded, Xinhua said. It didn't say where the deaths took place, and Fujian officials contacted by telephone said they had no more details.
