North of Romania Invaded by Waters


BUCHAREST (Monitorul Online) More than 1,100 houses in almost 100 localities have been affected by inundations.

Hundreds of persons in several localities in the Cluj county are isolated. Two national routes and a railway are blocked.

According to the data announced by the Ministry of Public Administration, more than 1,100 houses in almost 100 localities belonging to the counties Bihor, Bistrita-Nasaud, Maramures and Suceava and more than 1,500 hectares of plots of land, as well as roads, bridges and electrical networks have been affected by the floods provoked by the rapid and massive melting of the snow and by the abundant precipitations of the last days. The most affected were 50 localities in the Maramures county, where 474 dwelling places were damaged by the floods and one of them was destroyed.

At the same time, the waters damaged 20 streets, 15 communal roads, 8 county roads and 2 national routes. The electrical network was damaged in 9 localities. 4 sheep died and 571 persons were forced to leave their houses.

The localities Crasna, Valea Viseului and Bistra are isolated because of the damaged roads. Local authorities do their best in order to provide the population in Sighetul Marmatiei with water. In case Tisza's level does not diminish within 48 hours, the Ministry of National Defense will intervene by using a helicopter. The value of the damages in the Maramures county was evaluated to 102.2 billion lei, according to a preliminary report of the Maramures County Commission of Protection against Calamities. In the Bihor county, 55 houses have been affected by the floods, whereas in Suceava, the inundations damaged 60 dwelling places in 6 localities.
