MOUNT NEBO, Jordan (Reuters) - Pope John Paul gazed out over the biblical Promised Land Monday as he began a pilgrimage in the footsteps of Moses and Jesus and called for an end to the war and injustices of the modern Middle East.
The Pontiff was starting a week-long journey to the Holy
Land that he has dreamed of
throughout his papacy. It will also take him to Israel and Palestinian-ruled
areas.
The Pontiff went straight from Amman airport to Mount
Nebo where Moses looked across
at the land of milk and honey he would never reach.
``The Pope wants to see the Holy Land through the eyes
of Moses. But unlike Moses the
Pope intends to go there,'' Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told
reporters on the
Pope's plane during the journey to Jordan from Rome.
After praying at a basilica on the mountain, the Pontiff
stood under a tall cross outside the
church and gazed westward at parts of the Dead Sea, Jordan River and Jericho
in the West
Bank. Haze appeared to have blocked the view of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
