NEW YORK (AP) - Much of the East baked in a second day of August-like heat Tuesday, with states sending workers home early and utilities warning they might not be able to keep air conditioners running. The thermometer registered a record-tying 97 by early afternoon at Newark, N.J., and a record-breaking 96 at Raleigh-Durham, N.C. Washington sizzled at 98, and Philadelphia quickly reached a record 95. It also was 95 in New York. Even in usually temperate New Hampshire, air conditioners were sold out. A Sears in Concord, N.H., ran out, and customers stood in the aisles waiting for the next truck delivery until they were told it was delayed.
