U.S. Heat Wave Kills 44, Curbs Power...07/08/99

(MSNBC) The New York City Medical Examiner’s office said 10 people had died from heat-related causes since the grueling weather set in over the July 4 Independence Day holiday weekend.

Six of the hyperthermia deaths, when body temperature exceeds 105 degrees Fahrenheit, occurred in Manhattan and four in Brooklyn.

Five people were reported to have died in New Jersey, two in the Pittsburgh area, three in New England and two in Washington. A cool front on Wednesday brought relief from days of stifling heat and humidity and utility companies said electricity demand up and down the East Coast was expected to fall by the end of the day.

POWER OUTAGES CONTINUE

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities said in a statement Wednesday that heavy demand and equipment failures continued to deprive some residents of power for a second day.

Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G) said a total of 105,000 customers had experienced outages since Monday with 4,700 still without power as of late Wednesday morning. The Board said later that PSE&G still had scattered outages.

GPU Energy, the state’s other big provider, said Wednesday morning that more than 12,000 of its customers were without power, most in central New Jersey due to two damaged transformers at a substation in Red Bank.
