CHARLOTTETOWN - Atlantic Canada is bracing for yet another storm. Many residents have spent most of the weekend digging out or mopping up after flooding and heavy snowfall on Friday night.

On Monday a new storm will bring snow, then change to rain, and possibly freezing rain, for most of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Coastal communities in Prince Edward Island are still assessing the damage in the wake of Friday night's flooding. A full moon and stormy surf created a tidal surge, forcing the evacuation and sandbagging of many homes.

Most low-lying areas of the island experienced some flooding, especially along the south shore. The Tignish area of northwestern P.E.I. was also hit.

In Mount Stewart, fire officials used boats to rescue people from their homes, which were taking in water. In Charlottetown, the aptly named Water Street area of downtown was under a couple of metres of water at one point.

Mayor George MacDonald says the city is assessing damage to houses and other buildings, and seeking financial aid to pay for repairs. No one was hurt.

Across the Northumberland Strait in New Brunswick, people are also trying to mop up and tally the damage caused by the flood.
