LOS ANGELES (AP) - A storm packing tornado-like bursts of wind and driving rain damaged buildings, snarled highways and was blamed for two fatal traffic crashes in southern California Wednesday. The wind bursts, which authorities compared to the power of tornadoes, peeled the roofs off two buildings and uprooted a 65-foot pine tree in Los Angeles, said Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. The California Highway Patrol said there were more than 570 accidents. The storm dumped 1.43 inches of rain on Burbank and left up to 8 inches of fresh snow in Big Bear, which was bracing for an early weekend influx of skiers. At the beach near Topanga Canyon north of Los Angeles, lifeguards rescued a wind surfer from the choppy waters of the Pacific Ocean, while an afternoon mudslide blocked one lane of Interstate 405 between the San Fernando Valley and the city's west side.
