11 Dead In South African Floods...12/23/99

DURBAN, South Africa (AP) - Mudslides and floods in the eastern South African province of KwaZulu-Natal killed at least 11 people, and the death toll was expected to climb as reports came in of people being swept away by raging rivers, officials said Wednesday. Some roads were temporarily closed, bridges were flooded and several rivers burst their banks. In the worst hit area of Pinetown, just west of the Indian Ocean port of Durban, nine people died and more than 1,000 were left homeless, said Johan Kuhrau, head of the local disaster management center. Some people drowned and others, including a 3-year-old child, were crushed when the walls of their houses collapsed on top of them.
