4 Reported Dead In Indonesia Quake...12/22/99

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A strong earthquake shook Indonesia's main island, Java, killing at least four people and injuring dozens of others, local officials said Wednesday. The magnitude 6.4 quake hit Tuesday night, centered beneath the Indian Ocean, about 145 miles southwest of Jakarta, Indonesia's Geophysics Agency said. Hundreds of houses were damaged in several villages in West Java province. Rescue teams were on the scene and details of the damage were sketchy, said Muhtadi, a local government official at Pandegelang district. "We have reports of four people dead. Many houses were badly damaged," said Muhtadi, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. The quake was felt in the capital Jakarta, but there were no reports of damage in the city.
