Meningitis Outbreaks Kill 585 People in Niger...04/22/00

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Outbreaks of meningitis in Niger has killed at least 585 people, health officials said Friday.

The outbreaks, seasonal in Africa's arid Sahel region in the early months of the year, were concentrated in the west near the capital Niamey and in the northeast, they added.

A total of 7,388 cases had been reported this year, they said.

The officials said that development partners had given two million doses of vaccine out of five million needed.
